New York City

May 1–5, 2026 · Your birthday trip

Weather

55–70°F, spring

Staying

Upper West Side, near Lincoln Center

The thread

Music. All of it, for you.

Friday, May 1

Morning

Fly into New York, check in

We land, drop our bags, walk outside. The Upper West Side in spring. Trees are out, everything smells like rain and possibility.

Afternoon

Central Park, no agenda

We just walk. Maybe Bethesda Fountain, maybe the Ramble. You'll want to sit on a bench and people-watch. I'll let you.

Evening

NY Philharmonic — Dudamel conducts The Firebird

David Geffen Hall, Lincoln Center. Gustavo Dudamel's inaugural season, Sheku Kanneh-Mason on cello, and Stravinsky's Firebird to close. This is not a casual Friday night. This is the opening statement.

Late

Dinner at Don Angie

West Village. The chrysanthemum salad, the lasagna. Small, warm, loud in the best way.

Saturday, May 2

Morning

Slow brunch, somewhere good

We sleep in. No alarms. Coffee first, then brunch at Sadelle's or Jacob's Pickles. Your call.

Afternoon

Wander

The Met, MoMA, SoHo shopping, or a bookshop crawl. Whatever pulls you. This is your trip.

Evening

Met OperaLa Bohème

Puccini at the Metropolitan Opera House. The chandelier rises, the orchestra swells, and you're going to cry during "Sì, mi chiamano Mimì." I'm ready for it.

Late

Jazz at Village Vanguard

If we still have energy. The most famous jazz club in the world, tiny and legendary.

Sunday, May 3

Morning

Coffee and bagels

Real New York bagels. This matters.

Afternoon

Steinway Hall, then the Hudson

We're visiting Steinway's showroom on 6th Ave. You can play. Then we walk the Hudson River Greenway at golden hour.

Evening

Dinner at Tatiana

Right inside Lincoln Center. Creative, buzzy, great cocktails. We eat where the musicians eat.

Monday, May 4 — Your Birthday

Morning

Birthday brunch

Somewhere beautiful. Balthazar, maybe. White tablecloth, pastry basket, champagne before noon. It's your day.

Afternoon

Whatever you want

The Met Museum. A long walk. Shopping. Reading in the park. Today is yours, completely.

Evening

Birthday dinner at Le Bernardin

Three Michelin stars. Elegant without being stiff. The seafood tasting menu. This is the dinner, babe. Happy birthday.

Tuesday, May 5 — The Finale

Daytime

Last morning in the city

Pack slow, grab lunch at Via Carota or Thai Diner. Soak it in.

7:00 PM

Carnegie Hall — Concert of the Century, 50th Anniversary

Emanuel Ax at the piano. Renée Fleming. Joyce DiDonato. The original 1976 concert had Bernstein and Horowitz. This is the 50th anniversary gala in the Stern Auditorium. I saved the best for last. This is why we're here an extra night. This is the whole trip.
